Patriots top the Ravens to advance to the Super Bowl

The AFC Championship has come and gone with the New England Patriots being Super Bowl bound once again. Even though the Patriots were the favorites to come out on top and with good reason, the Baltimore Ravens put up one hell of a fight and could’ve very well been the team to advance. The Ravens had two chances to either win the game or send it into overtime if wide receiver Lee Evans would’ve held onto a touchdown pass or kicker Billy Cundiff would’ve hit a 32-yard field goal with time expiring.

With Evans dropping a sure touchdown and Cundiff choking on a chip shot field, the Baltimore Ravens just couldn’t get a break late in the game against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. There is no question that the Ravens were worthy of advancing to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2000, but fate was on the Patriots’ side on Sunday and now New England will go to yet another Super Bowl in the Bill Belichick era.

Tom Brady

So with a missed field goal by Ravens’ kicker Billy Cundiff with 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Patriots went on to win this AFC Championship game by a score of 23-20. Even though the Patriots did come out on top in this game to advance to the Super Bowl, two-time NFL MVP quarterback Tom Brady had a rough game with two interceptions and no touchdown passes thrown. Despite not being able to throw and TDs in this game against the Ravens, Brady did rush for a touchdown and helped New England ultimately get the win.

One of the key players for the Patriots in the AFC Championship was running back Benjarvus Green-Ellis. New England isn’t known for their running game, but without a solid performance out of Green-Ellis they would not be Super Bowl bound. The Patriots’ running back finished with 68 yards on 15 carries and a rushing touchdown.

As for the Ravens, Baltimore got the job done offensively through the air. Joe Flacco actually outplayed Tom Brady in this game with 306 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and just one interception. So despite the criticism Flacco has received in the past, the Ravens’ starting quarterback was able to come through when it counted and would’ve had the game-winning touchdown pass if Lee Evans would’ve held onto the football in the endzone.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, Joe Flacco’s impressive performance wasn’t enough to get the best of the New England Patriots. Now Tom Brady and company will head to Indianapolis to face off against the New York Giants in a rematch of the 2007 Super Bowl in which Eli Manning and his boys ended the perfect season for Bill Belichick’s seemingly unbeatable team.

New York Giants clinch NFC East title with win over Dallas Cowboys

The NFC East division title race came down to the final game of the NFL regular season once again with the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys the last two teams left standing in the division. Both teams had drastic ups-and-downs during the regular season and seemed to be destined to play one another in a winner-take-all showdown at one point or another. Ironically enough, that game was played in Week 17 and the New York Giants did not disappoint on their home field at MetLife Stadium.

Even though the Dallas Cowboys were considered to be force to be reckoned with in this football game even with a banged up Tony Romo under center, the New York Giants were clearly the better all-around team. There has been a lot of talk about how good the Cowboys’ offense is and the potential for this team to just blow up at any moment and put a big number on the scoreboard, but the Giants’ defense came to play in the regular season finale and got the win at MetLife Stadium, 31-14.

Ahmad Bradshaw

Not only were the Giants firing on all cylinders on defense, but the offense also got in on the action by lighting up Rob Ryan’s defense for 31 points. Eli Manning was definitely a big part of the success on offense as he threw for a game-high 346 yards and three touchdowns while posting an impressive 136.7 passer rating with no interceptions. Even though the Giants’ running game wasn’t all that impressive, Ahmad Bradshaw led the way with 57 yards and a touchdown.

Giants’ wideout Victor Cruz really made headlines on Sunday night as he caught six passes for a game-high 178 yards and a touchdown. Along with being the game’s leading receiver, Cruz was the biggest playmaker of the night as he got the Giants’ offense started with a 74-yard touchdown grab from Eli Manniny in the first quarter.

After that amazing touchdown by Cruz, the Giants’ offense was just rolling and continued to keep the Cowboys at bay with Ahmad Bradshaw running for and catching touchdowns in the second quarter. With the Giants up 21-0, the Cowboys’ season was basically over as they had no answer for the Giants despite scoring two touchdowns in the second half off of passes from Tony Romo to Laurent Robinson.

Needless to say, the New York Giants were the better all-around team in this battle for the NFC East division title and now will have to try and keep their season alive by going head-to-head against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Wild-Card Round this Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Fortunately for the Giants, this game will be played at MetLife Stadium which could give Eli Manning and company the slight edge on Sunday. Despite the home field advantage, the Falcons will not be going down without a fight and will be incredibly tough to stop on both sides of the football.

NFL Week 15: New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Tim Tebow faces his toughest test of the season as he goes up against Tom Brady

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos Sun. Dec. 18, 2011 4:15 p.m. EST

As arguably one of the most anticipated matchups in Week 15, the New England Patriots will head to the Mile High City to take on the red-hot Denver Broncos and up-and-coming quarterback Tim Tebow. With the Broncos having won six games in a row in thrilling fashion, everyone in the NFL has begun to pay attention to the Denver franchise and their chances of making something in the happen if they can win the AFC West division title.

Coming into this showdown between extremely popular quarterbacks Tom Brady and Tim Tebow, the Patriots are also riding a winning streak after having won five in a row. Despite their winning streak and New England being on the verge of an AFC East division title, the Patriots have flown relatively under the radar this season and have taken a backseat to teams dominating the headlines like the Broncos, New Orleans Saints and the undefeated Green Bay Packers.

Tom Brady

With that being said, this game against the Broncos in Week 15 will be a statement game in my opinion as the Patriots will look to put up a big number on Denver this Sunday in the Mile High City. The biggest challenge against the Broncos won’t be Tim Tebow though because the Denver defense is as good as any in the NFL right now.

There is no question that superstar quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady can torch an opposing secondary like no other gunslinger in the league can, but he will have to deal with the constant pressure of Elvis Dumervil and rookie Von Miller. Brady’s chances of coming out on top are favorable, but the Broncos might be able to pull off the upset.

Talking at the benches during the Seattle Game

Perhaps one of the biggest problems for the New England Patriots in Week 15 will be their banged up defense. Along with injuries to players on defense, the Patriots have been arguably one of the worst teams in the NFL on that side of the football this season and have found it very difficult to contain opposing offenses. Tim Tebow and company will almost certainly try to take advantage of that in the ground game with some hardnosed running back by Tebow and running back Willis McGahee.

There is no telling how this game will pan out, but with the Patriots struggling against the Broncos in the Bill Belichick era there is a good chance that John Fox’s squad can give this Super Bowl title contender a run for their money.

As of right now, the New England Patriots are favored to get the win over the Denver Broncos in Week 15 with a -7 point spread. The Patriots might be able to be the first team to get the best of Tim Tebow as a starter (besides the Detroit Lions), but I believe the Broncos will continue to be competitive with another inspiring performance in the second half with Tebow leading the way.

Take the Broncos +7.

Seattle Seahawks stay in playoff hunt with win over St. Louis Rams

Last year the Seattle Seahawks had a very forgettable regular season as they ended Pete Carroll’s debut season with a losing record of 7-9. Despite the losing record, the Seahawks were able to make NFL history by being the first team in the league to make the playoffs and win a division title with a losing record. This was obviously nothing to be proud of, but Seattle did make waves in the playoffs by convincingly beating the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.

This season the Seattle Seahawks have struggled once again as they haven’t been able to get things together in the post Matt Hasselback era. With the Seahawks bringing in free agent Tarvaris Jackson to be the starter, the team hasn’t exactly been a force through the air this season and as a result has struggled on offense all season long.

Seattle Seahawks

Fortunately, the Seahawks have gotten back on track as of late with the emergence of veteran running back Marshawn Lynch. With Lynch playing better than ever for the Seahawks, Seattle has turned the corner and a result won two straight including the Monday Night Football showdown with the division rival St. Louis Rams.

Even though the St. Louis Rams have also struggled this season and are one of the worst teams in the league with a 2-11 record after the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Sam Bradford and company were thought to give the Seahawks a run for their money on Monday night. Heading into halftime, the Seahawks had the 10-3, but the Rams were still hanging around with some hardnosed defense.

Despite the Rams giving the Seahawks some trouble in the first half, the second half was a different story with Seattle scoring 10 points in both of the final two quarters. Lynch played a major part in the Seahawks 30-13 win over St. Louis on Monday Night Football with a game-high 115 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

LA Rams

Sam Bradford was trying to do all he could against the tough Seahawks defense on Monday night, but just couldn’t get the offense going and finished with 193 yards and one interception. With just 12 completions on 29 passes, Bradford finished with an ugly 49.9 passer rating and might have been better off watching on the sidelines nursing his recent ankle injury.

Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson was the only real offensive force for the lowly St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football with 123 total yards (63 rushing, 60 passing) and a rushing touchdown. Jackson continues to be the only reason this team has any wins this season, but with his injury history he might not be able to hold up from here on out taking the abuse he does out of the backfield in St. Louis.

Bet on your Favorite NFL Team with Bovada Sportsbook

Believe it or not, the Seattle Seahawks aren’t out of the running for a playoff spot in the NFC Conference just yet as they have a 6-7 record and might be able to clinch one of the two NFC Wild Card spot with three more wins.
