During the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos addressed one of the biggest concerns after losing superstar wide receiver Brandon Marshall (Miami Dolphins) by selecting one of the most promising wideouts in Demaryius Thomas out of Georgia Tech with the 22nd overall pick.

Even though this was the ideal pick for the Denver Broncos, their next selection caught everyone by surprise as the team that just traded for Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns and already had a solid starting quarterback in Kyle Orton under center, selected former Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow just three picks (25th) after selecting Thomas.

This was a questionable move to say the least as the Broncos were in no need of another quarterback, especially with all the attention surrounding Tebow in the offseason and doubts about his throwing motion, but head coach Josh McDaniels chose to select the former Florida Gator anyway and so far the gamble has started to pay off.

Even though Tim Tebow has to work his way up the quarterback depth chart with Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn ahead of him, the two-time BCS champion seems to be doing well as he was impressive in his first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals and started a debate about whether or not he should be Orton’s backup instead of Quinn.

Despite the recent debate about whether or not Tebow should be the second quarterback on the depth chart, the rookie quarterback has suffered a bit of a setback recently as he was a little banged up after rushing for his first NFL touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Reportedly, the hit he took while scoring his first touchdown gave him some bruised ribs and kept him out of some practices this past week. Not only was Tebow held out of practice due to the bruised ribs, but he also missed his second preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

During the Denver Broncos second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, backup quarterback Brady Quinn made a better case for the second man on the depth chart as he played well with 115 passing yards and no interceptions or touchdowns, but did have a lost fumble.

Even though Brady Quinn played better in his second preseason game, I believe the consensus with the Denver Broncos coaching staff and around the league is that Tim Tebow is the better fit as Kyle Orton’s backup. With the ability to hurt opposing defenses both with his arm and his feet, Tebow is a multiple threat and a more well rounded quarterback than Quinn who has consistently failed to live up to expectations throughout his entire NFL career.

It will be interesting to see who ultimately ends up with the backup job in the Mile High City, but until Tim Tebow gets those ribs healthy, the job is Brady Quinn’s to lose.
