Tim Tebow misses Denver Broncos second preseason with bruised ribs

During the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos addressed one of the biggest concerns after losing superstar wide receiver Brandon Marshall (Miami Dolphins) by selecting one of the most promising wideouts in Demaryius Thomas out of Georgia Tech with the 22nd overall pick.

Even though this was the ideal pick for the Denver Broncos, their next selection caught everyone by surprise as the team that just traded for Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns and already had a solid starting quarterback in Kyle Orton under center, selected former Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow just three picks (25th) after selecting Thomas.

This was a questionable move to say the least as the Broncos were in no need of another quarterback, especially with all the attention surrounding Tebow in the offseason and doubts about his throwing motion, but head coach Josh McDaniels chose to select the former Florida Gator anyway and so far the gamble has started to pay off.

Even though Tim Tebow has to work his way up the quarterback depth chart with Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn ahead of him, the two-time BCS champion seems to be doing well as he was impressive in his first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals and started a debate about whether or not he should be Orton’s backup instead of Quinn.

Despite the recent debate about whether or not Tebow should be the second quarterback on the depth chart, the rookie quarterback has suffered a bit of a setback recently as he was a little banged up after rushing for his first NFL touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Reportedly, the hit he took while scoring his first touchdown gave him some bruised ribs and kept him out of some practices this past week. Not only was Tebow held out of practice due to the bruised ribs, but he also missed his second preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

During the Denver Broncos second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, backup quarterback Brady Quinn made a better case for the second man on the depth chart as he played well with 115 passing yards and no interceptions or touchdowns, but did have a lost fumble.

Even though Brady Quinn played better in his second preseason game, I believe the consensus with the Denver Broncos coaching staff and around the league is that Tim Tebow is the better fit as Kyle Orton’s backup. With the ability to hurt opposing defenses both with his arm and his feet, Tebow is a multiple threat and a more well rounded quarterback than Quinn who has consistently failed to live up to expectations throughout his entire NFL career.

It will be interesting to see who ultimately ends up with the backup job in the Mile High City, but until Tim Tebow gets those ribs healthy, the job is Brady Quinn’s to lose.

The Denver Broncos next preseason game will be against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, August 29th.

Percy Harvin playing status uncertain after collapsing in practice

No other team in the NFL has been surrounded by more media attention this offseason than the Minnesota Vikings. Even though the Vikings are pretty good about not having players in the news for all the wrong reasons like off the field trouble, the Brett Favre saga and constant waffling has kept the Vikings frequently in the sports headlines.

Well, the wait is finally over with the Brett Favre finally deciding to come back one more season under center for the Minnesota Vikings after three teammates flew out to Mississippi to convince him to comeback, but even though all the attention has been directed towards Favre’s return and still is, one of his favorite wide receivers in the offense is really hurting right now as Percy Harvin is still dealing with some extremely painful migraines.

During the Minnesota Vikings inspired run to the NFC championship game against the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints last season, Percy Harvin became one of the team’s best receivers in just his rookie season and ended up being the Offensive Rookie of the Year for his effort.

Even though the Harvin’s play was much better than anticipated last season, the former Florida Gators standout was dealing with migraines basically all season long, but even though he was in pain for most of the year, he fought through and still finish the year as one of the league’s best rookies on the offensive side of the football.

This season the migraines have begun to flare up once again for the promising young wideout as he sat out the majority of training camp due to the recent death of his Grandmother and the fact that the migraines have continued to bother him.

Unfortunately, the Minnesota Vikings became sick and tired of playing the waiting game with the Percy Harvin as they were leaning towards moving on without him this season, but after being given an ultimatum, Harvin came back to practice.

Despite the Minnesota Vikings being content without one of their best wide receivers back on the practice field, especially with Pro Bowler Sidney Rice still out with a hip injury, bringing back Harvin seemed to be a mistake as he suffered a serious migraine on the sidelines in practice and collapsed.

After Harvin collapsed on the field, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and his playing status for the upcoming regular season remains uncertain at best.

Although Harvin turned out to be alright after being sent to the hospital, Percy’s future moving forward will be a big question mark for Vikings head coach Brad Childress and he will have to decide how to use him during the rest of the preseason.

For the time being, Percy Harvin will not be receiving anytime on the gridiron during the preseason to avoid any further injury, but the Vikings still don’t know how serious these migraines will be through the regular season.

Big Ben Reminds Us How Good He Is, But Steelers Look Safe with Leftwich

Ben Roethlisberger may be suspended for the first four to six games of the season but he reminded us that he’s still one of the best players in the league.

Roethlisberger completed six of his eight throws for 76 yards against the New York Giants. He did not throw a touchdown, was picked off and sacked once but was efficient enough to assure the Steelers that his personal problems won’t affect his play on the field.

“I don’t care about the disruptions,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “He’s (Roethlisberger) a professional. His job is to play. He’s done that and he needs to continue to do that. We’ll deal with all the other things we need to deal with in the appropriate manner.”

Roethlisberger led a 58-yard drive that ended in a 26-yard field goal. He was efficient and constantly found rhythm. Definitely good news for Pittsburgh.

On the other hand, his replacement for the time being, Byron Leftwich was 3 of 6 for 95 yards including a 68-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace. Leftwich did not find success as a starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, which should concern the Steelers while Roethlisberger serves his suspension. He is still susceptible to bonehead plays like the sneak he tried to pull off at the 1-yard line Saturday. The Steelers are hoping that Leftwich can hold down the fort for the first six games of the season.

“It’s not an issue now,” Steelers safety Troy Polamalu said. “When the season starts, it’s going to be a whole different story. It will be interesting because we’ve never had to face something like that with a major role player on the team.”

If Byron Leftwich struggles at the beginning of the season, Dennis Dixon is more than capable of taking over. Dixon completed 7 of his 8 attempts for 82 yards. He set up two scores that put the game out of reach for the Giants.

Roethlisberger will have a lot of catching up to do once his suspension ends but was fairly optimistic in his preseason stint.

“A lot of nerves, butterflies, excitement but to get back out there with the guys and get between the lines and the lights and the away stadium; it was awesome,” he said.

Tim Tebow makes strong case to be number two quarterback in first preseason game

Coming into the Denver Broncos training camp, the consensus on the team was then Kyle Orton was the number one quarterback under center with Brady Quinn as the second option and rookie Tim Tebow bringing up the rear at third string.

Even though Tim Tebow was thought to be nothing more than a third string quarterback heading into this season, his Denver Broncos jersey (#15) has become the best-selling jersey in the NFL and a two-time BCS champion out of Florida has had a media circus all following him ever since he was drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft.

No matter how many people have doubted him or his ability to play on the NFL level with an awkward throwing motion, Tim Tebow has kept his head up high and become a very likable player in Denver and around the league.

Not only has Tebow been considered the future face of the Denver Broncos franchise, but as time has rolled on many people have started to wonder if the promising young quarterback will play earlier than anticipated in the regular season.

The one thing that arguably one of the best college football players of all-time has brought to the Denver Broncos is his leadership, which is something the team is sorely lacked over the years with infamously selfish players like quarterback Jay Cutler and wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Despite the fact that he still has to prove himself on the football field, which is priority number one right now, Tebow does not have to prove that he’s a born leader and the ideal candidate to take over the starting quarterback position in the near future.

Unlike other NFL franchises around the league, the Denver Broncos have three quarterbacks that could arguably start on other teams. With Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow, choosing a starter is easy as Orton is the guy head coach Josh McDaniels wants under center to start the regular season, but picking a backup is getting increasingly more difficult as Tebow shinned in his debut while Quinn really struggled.

The Denver Broncos may have ultimately lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in their first preseason game 33-14, but the game was pretty telling to say the least as at times Tim Tebow looked solid in all aspects of his game finishing with eight completions on 13 passes (same as Kyle Orton) for 108 passing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Brady Quinn on the other hand may have improved Tim Tebow’s chances of being the second quarterback on Josh McDaniels’ depth chart as the former Notre Dame gunslinger finished with just six completions on 16 passes and 84 passing yards with one interception.

At this point in time, I really can’t see either Tebow or Quinn knocking off Orton as the starting quarterback in Denver, but the Florida Gators legend has definitely turned heads after his first game in the preseason and could end up being the number two guy under center before the regular season begins for the Broncos.

New England Patriots Ty Warren to miss the season with hip injury

Coming into the 2010-2011 NFL season, the New England Patriots will be looking to prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the AFC Conference after ending last season by getting blowout in the first round of the playoffs last season against the Baltimore Ravens 33-14.

Over the last half decade or so, the Patriots have had no problems on the offensive side of the football as they have arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the game today in Tom Brady and a dominant receiving corps with perennial Pro Bowler Randy Moss and Wes Welker leading the way.

The running game has always been questionable and close to nonexistent in New England, but just like the Indianapolis Colts with Peyton Manning under center, the Patriots have had no problem without a solid ground game with Tom Brady as their gunslinger.

The thing that the New England Patriots will be worried about next season is on the defensive side of the football as they have gotten progressively worse with the retirements of Teddy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and trades sending Mike Vrabel (Kansas City Chiefs) and Richard Seymour (Oakland Raiders) elsewhere.

As if adjusting to life without their veteran defensive players wasn’t hard enough, the Patriots have taken another huge blow to their defense recently when they learned that two-time Super Bowl champion defensive end Ty Warren would be have to sit out for the entire season with a hip injury.

Losing Warren to injury is a devastating injury to say the least as last season the Patriots biggest problem was maintaining leads and stopping the run. This season it appears they will experience more of the same on the defensive side of the football as they no longer have Richard Seymour after trading him to the Oakland Raiders last season and will be replacing Ty Warren with two-time Pro Bowler Derrick Burgess who was considering retirement before Warren went down.

Needless to say, Tom Brady and company will have their work cut out for them this season as they will have to put a lot of points on the board if their defense can’t contain potent offenses on their schedule this season like the Cincinnati Bengals (Week 1), Baltimore Ravens (Week 6), San Diego Chargers (Week 7), Minnesota Vikings (Week 8), Indianapolis Colts (Week 11) and Green Bay Packers (Week 15).

Even though this season will be tough to say the least for the New England Patriots, head coach Bill Belichick is no stranger to adversity and will take this disadvantage on defense as a challenge that they will embrace and use as motivation.

The one thing the Patriots need to concentrate on moving forward is keeping their team healthy, especially on offense, as they will be in serious trouble if they see a big-name player like Tom Brady, Randy Moss or Wes Welker go down with an injury that keeps them out a considerable amount of time.

Personally, if the Patriots can stay healthy, they will be playoff bound once again in my opinion, but if not they will struggle to compete even in the AFC East division with the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins.
